nhsNHS, short for the National Health Service, is the public funded health care organization of the United Kingdom. The system offers the majority of health care services in England including primary care (such as general practitioners), in-patient care, long-term healthcare, ophthalmology and dentistry most of which are free of cost.

Although the NHS mistakes have improved dramatically since its establishment, it still does not meet with the proper medical standards for patients throughout the United Kingdom. More than twenty five percent of the hospitals fail to meet emergencies especially those related with children. Most specialist paediatric units were found to be good but a few substantial hospitals were certainly a step backward when it came to levels of activity, training and emergency cover. NHS cover ups were and still are a common problem.

Reports showed that surgeons did not interact with the children enough and paediatric life support systems were not available for most emergency cases. The majority of the doctors were not trained in basic child protection and so were half the anaesthetists. This posed a serious concern as it meant the lack of skill to recognize signs of child abuse. NHS mistakes and NHS cover ups are a public outrage.

The recent reports mentioned that aside from the child care, the worst cared for patients were those in the mental units. NHS mistakes include not restraining the patients properly, having poorly kept premises, and inadequate resuscitation facilities. The waiting time for many facilities has been drastically reduced to prevent these NHS cover ups, but the people in a few areas may still wait for psychological treatment or a simple hearing aid for almost two years.

The annual performance reports stated that the hospitals were greatly improving their standards each year but the fact remained that many paediatric units could not meet the regular standards. Many skilled practitioners accept that paediatric care is of utmost importance and they are not being met with at the medical units under the NHS. This could mean a real setback in the general health of the children of the UK.
